Our Community

Welcome to Our Beautiful Community and Warm Greetings from Balintore United Free Church!

Nestled along the shores of the Moray Firth in Easter Ross, Balintore (Scottish Gaelic: Baile an Todhair, meaning “The Bleaching Town”) is one of the Seaboard Villages, alongside Hilton and Shandwick. Once known as Port an Ab (“Abbot’s Port”) because of its connection with Fearn Abbey, the village grew around fishing and the harbour built in the 1890s. Today, with a population of around 1,000, Balintore remains closely tied to the sea, its shoreline marked by the well-known Mermaid of the North sculpture standing on Clach Dubh. The Seaboard Centre serves as a hub for the three villages, reflecting the strong sense of local identity shared across this coastal community.

The Christian heritage of the area runs deep. Between 1921 and 1923, the Balintore Revivals brought a renewed seriousness about faith to many in the villages, with prayer meetings and preaching that led to lasting spiritual change. Much of the early congregation of Balintore United Free Church traced their commitment to those years. In the years that followed, the ministry of Duncan Campbell helped to strengthen and pastor the congregation, preceding his later involvement in the Lewis Revival. The village is also associated with John Ross, who translated the Bible into Korean; he is commemorated locally with a monument and visitor centre between Balintore and Hilton, reminding us that from this small Highland community the message of the Gospel reached far beyond Scotland.

A Rich Heritage

The wider Seaboard area also bears witness to an even older Christian story. The remarkable Shandwick Stone, standing near the shore in Shandwick, and the beautifully carved Hilton of Cadboll Stone, reflect a vibrant Pictish Christian presence over a thousand years ago. These stones, with their intricate carvings and crosses, root our community in a long tradition of worship and witness. As a church family in Balintore today, we are thankful for this rich heritage and warmly welcome all who come to share in the life and fellowship of our congregation.
